Back to the 1780's! If it sounded good back then, why not today?

WÖR (pronounced ‘were’) is a band of five musicians whose curiosity, passion and talent has led to a niche goldmine of melodies in stunning contemporary arrangements. With their finely textured arrangements WÖR injects new energy into 18th-century melodies from the Flanders region of Belgium. Their music shines an inventive spotlight, with a modern twist, on the melodies in these manuscripts. A driving baritone saxophone, a solid guitar, accordion riffs, a soaring fiddle, and virtuoso bagpipes color their music, creating WÖR’s signature powerful sound.

Since 2015, WÖR has been touring concert halls and festivals across Europe, North America, and Australia. They have released four albums: Back to the 1780s (2015), Sssht (2017), About Towers (2021), and Songbooks (2026). In 2021 and 2025, they were nominated for 'Best Live Band' at the Flemish Folk Awards. In 2018 and 2026, they received the prestigious German Critics' Choice Award (Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik) for their albums Sssht and Songbooks - Live​

Back to the 1780's! Als het toen goed klonk, waarom vandaag niet?

WÖR pompt nieuwe energie in 18e eeuwse melodieën uit België met een groove die aanstekelijk werkt. Een stuwende baritonsaxofoon, een stevige gitaar, riffs op accordeon, scheurende viool en melodieuze doedelzakken kleuren deze oude melodieën en zo zet WÖR een krachtige sound neer.

Sinds 2015 toert WÖR in concertzalen en op festivals door Europa, Noord-Amerika en Australië. Ze brachten vier albums uit: Back to the 1780s (2015), Sssht (2017), About Towers (2021) en Songbooks (2026). In 2021 en 2025 werden ze genomineerd voor ‘Best Live Band’ tijdens de Flemish Folk Awards. In 2018 en 2026 ontvingen ze de Duitse onderscheiding Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik voor hun albums 'Sssht' en 'Songbooks -Live'.

These people were the musicians of their town: violinists, bell tower musicians, dance masters... They played at all sorts of events, from official ceremonies to parties and informal occasions.

Petrus Josephus Van Belle, 1743, Viane

This collection of tunes by Van Belle was discovered in a church organ in Viane in 1978.

Dit speelmansboekje werd in 1978 geleden ontdekt in het kerkorgel van Viane.

 

Ioannes de Gruijtters, 1746, Antwerpen

De Gruijtters was the carillon player of Antwerp. In his manuscript 194 melodies and popular tunes from his time got noted down.

De Gruijtters was stadsbeiaardier van Antwerpen. In zijn manuscript staan 194 bekende melodieën en populaire deuntjes van zijn tijd.

 

Fam. Di Martinelli, ca. 1750, Diest

This collection of four musicians books comes from the family archive of Di Martinelli, a family of musicians and lawyers from the town of Diest

Deze verzameling van vier speelmansboekjes uit het archief van de Di Martinelli, een familie van musici en advocaten uit Diest.

 

Jean-Baptiste-Robert d’Aubat de Saint-Flour, 1757, Gent

A dance master from Ghent. In 1757 his collection of "Honderd uytgelesen Contredansen" was published.

d'Aubat de Saint-Flour was dansmeester in Gent. In 1757 verscheen zijn bundel “Honderd uytgelesen Contredansen”.

 

Pierre Trappeniers, ca. 1775, Brussel

A dance master who lived in Brussels between 1734 and 1794 and published three books with contradances. 

Een dansmeester die tussen 1734 en 1794 in Brussel leefde en drie boekjes met contradansen publiceerde.

 

Franciscus De Prins, 1781, Leuven

Carillon player and organist at the Sint-Geertruikerk in Leuven.

De Prins was beiaardier en organist verbonden aan de Sint-Geertruikerk in Leuven.

P.J. Vanpelt, 1786, Tongeren/Maastricht

A collection of tunes well preserved in the beautiful Basilica of Tongeren, a city not far from the town Maastricht (NL) where the origin of this manuscript may be. 

Wie Vanpelt juist was, is niet met zekerheid te zeggen. Zijn speelmansboek ligt goed bewaard in de basiliek van Tongeren, maar vermoedelijk komt het oorspronkelijk uit de Nederlandse stad Maastricht.

Theodoor or Augustinus Everaerts,  1728, Antwerpen

The collection 'Beyaert’ is the oldest collection to be found in Belgium with music for carillon. It contains mainly Christmas carols.

De verzameling 'Beyaert’ is de oudste gekende verzameling van melodieën voor de beiaard en ze staat vol met kerstliedjes.

Oude en Nieuwe Hollantse Boerenlieties en Contredansen , ca 1710
This collection of 996 tunes in 13 booklets  was published from 1700 to 1716.

Wandembrille, ca. 1778, Namur
The Wandembrile Manuscript, dated 1778, contains 22 dance-themed pieces primarily consisting of minuets and marches.
